The subtitle here is something of a misnomer: as in Attenborough's previous volume, Adventures of a Young Naturalist, the emphasis in these travel journals from the 1950s and 60s is as much on varieties of human culture as on non-human natural history. Both books are re-issues: the first previously appeared in 1980 as The Zoo Quest Expeditions, and this most recent volume, exploring the Pacific islands, Madagascar and Australia, in 1981 as Journeys to the Past.
